Sepinwall’s Rewind Review

I remember being pretty scared the first time I saw this episode, and I was reminded of the scenes in Aliens when they first arrive at the terra-forming planet and find it deserted, all the people having been wiped out by the aliens. Even though I knew what was coming this time around, I was still pretty creeped out.

Here we take a closer look at both the Alliance and the Reavers. The latter was addressed in the movie, and knowing now where they came from and the connection between them and River’s “illness”, I viewed her reactions to the situation – especially when she woke up screaming – differently this time around. One of the things I feel we were robbed of when the show was cancelled was a more in depth look at the Alliance. I think they could have gone to some interesting places with it.

I really loved the scene pictured above and how the endless wide open space, while terrifying to Simon, was somehow soothing to River. Maybe being confronted with such vast “nonthingness” is a relief for her, whose brain is filled to capacity with troubling thoughts.

Mal’s character was fleshed out some more with regard to his opposition to the Alliance; and we got to see a softer side when he decided it was the right thing to do to lay the dead to rest with dignity before they looted the ship.

OK, favorite quotes.

JAYNE: Tell you what I think. I think that fellow
we ran into did everyone on board, killed
them all, then decided to take a swim through
space, see how fast his blood would boil out
of his ears.
WASH: You’re a very “up” person.

JAYNE: Whoa. I ain’t going over there with them
bodies, no ruttin’ way. Not if Reavers
messed with them.
ZOE: Jayne, you’ll scare the women.

HARKEN (to Zoe): And do you love him?
ZOE: I don’t see how that’s relevant.
HARKEN: Well, he is your husband.
ZOE: Yes.
HARKEN: You two met through Captain Reynolds?
ZOE: Captain was looking for a pilot. I found a husband. Seemed to work out.
HARKEN: You fought with Captain Reynolds in the war?
ZOE: Fought with a lot of people in the war.
HARKEN: And your husband?
ZOE: Fight with him sometimes, too.
HARKEN: Is there any particular reason you don’t wish to discuss your marriage?
ZOE: Don’t see that it’s any of your business, is all. We’re very private people.
Cut to the Commander now speaking with Wash.
WASH: The legs. Oh yeah, definitely have to say it was her legs. You can put that down. Her legs, and where her legs meet her back. Actually, that whole area. That, and above it.
